“This is Japan” is a weekly blog post where I talk a little about my life here.

It’s a place where I can share some of the strange, funny, or thought-provoking stories from my week. You can learn a little about what it is like to live in Japan and some of the weird and wonderful things here.

Hello, and welcome to my new self-hosted blog!

Let me be the first to say that my blog is a bit of a hot mess right now. I mentioned last week that I wanted to switch to a self-hosted blog. And here I am, stewieoverseas.com.

I have moved from WordPress.com to WordPress.org. I’m a bit nervous about this transition.

Why did I do it? Honestly, I don’t know.

I guess, go big or go home, right?

Anyway, after reading and watching tutorials online about how to migrate my old site to a self-hosted blog, I thought it seemed easy enough. Yet, somehow, I couldn’t figure out how to do it.

A few frustrating attempts later, I contacted my hosting service, and they did it for me. However, it took some time for them to start my request, and it was nearly midnight last night when everything was moved over. Needless to say, I went to bed and let my blog sit in disarray overnight with menus and categories all a-scatter.

This morning, I didn’t have a lot of time to work on it, since I had a couple orientations at school that I needed to attend.

I have tried to fix it up a bit tonight, but I’m having a hard time deciding on a theme. I’ve tried a few free ones, but I haven’t found one that I like. I may have to shell out and buy a theme, but my indecisiveness is kicking in.

Speaking of money, a self-hosted blog costs money. It’s no longer free, like I was doing at WordPress.com. I debated whether or not I should spend money on blogging.

In the end, I decided that I wanted to be able to do more to my blog, and I could only do more with a self-hosted blog. More, like what? I don’t even know. Though if I’m being completely honest, yeah I might like to make a teensy bit of money in return. Someday, somehow.

But even if blogging is a hobby right now, hobbies usually cost money.

Photography? Cameras, lenses, software.

Sports? Gear, clothes, equipment.

So why not spend a bit of money on blogging. That’s how I justified it to myself.

Also, go big or go home, right?

So here is my new self-hosted blog. I will post something on my old site later, after this one isn’t a mess anymore, directing viewers this way.

Also, I contacted Jetpack to move my followers, and it seems like it was successful. So if you could be so kind as to comment and let me know if you are still seeing my posts in your Reader, that would be great.

I realized this “this is Japan” post has no mention of Japan, so here is a completely unremarkable photo of cherry blossoms trees I took the other day.

Good! I know, I have to be responsible for backups, security, spam, etc. etc. But that’s cool. I like a challenge. How was your experience with self-hosted blog? May I ask what made you move away from it, and why you are thinking about it again?

Great! I hope you will like the new layout, once I figure what I’m doing.

Thank you. I’ll try to have something more Japanese to talk about this week.
