Why hello there! Long time no see! It’s been a minute since I wrote a “This is Japan” blog post. I don’t know why I haven’t gotten around to it. Maybe I felt like it was not so important right now.

Actually, can I be honest with you for a minute? I don’t know what I’m doing with my blog. Like, I’m so confused and frustrated and a little bit stressed about it.

Is that normal? Do all bloggers go through hard times with their blog and deciding the direction they want to take things?

It’s so easy to paint a pretty picture on your blog. It’s so easy to create this happy and exciting persona online who looks like they have everything under control. But in real life you have no idea what you are doing with your blog.

And if you’re like me, it’s also easy to be overwhelmed with fear and self-doubt. This idea is not good enough. That idea is boring. No one wants to read about that. How do I make this interesting? How do I make this topic valuable? And a million other questions and thoughts.

What should I do with my blog?

So I feel like I’m at a crossroads with my blog right now. I don’t know which direction to take it.

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you know that it started as an impromptu travel blog. Then I decided to focus more on Japan, then I wanted to turn it into an iPhone travel photography blog. I thought travel, photography, and Japan were all “travel-related” enough that I could fit them all together on one blog. But now I’m finding it a bit difficult.

I think a lot of people who follow my blog for the Japan stuff don’t care about iPhone photography, and people who follow it for photography might not care about Japan. And I would like to have one unified audience, not one who is only interested in half the things I post. Ya know?

Basically I’m thinking about turning my attention back to Japan. But I wonder if I am chasing away readers by going back and forth between topics and niches…  A lot of my Google and Pinterest traffic is coming from Japan related keyword searches, so it might be best for me.

But I’m curious what my readers think.

So I made a quick survey. It should only take two minutes, and it’s anonymous If you’ve been reading my blog for one year or one day, would you please complete the survey? It would help me out a lot and help give me focus with my blog. Please and thank you!

This is Japan is a regular blog series on Stewie Overseas. I might write something about Japanese culture, a story about living in Japan, something random and funny/weird, or something about my blog. It is a place where I can get a bit more personal with the things I share with my readers.

  1. Don’t get stressed out about it Jen. I took the survey too and I love reading your Japan posts, that’s what attracted me to your blog to be honest. I agree with Arundhati too, take time to figure out what you enjoy writing about and what makes you happy. Sending you a big virtual hug. Xx

  2. I just completed survey. Don’t feel disheartened, Jen. If we did not have self-doubt, we would not be plumbing our depths for our very best. You can always do both — posts on smartphone photography posts and Japan. Go with your mood. Hugs. xx
